Finding Positivity in Every Situation

It's the middle of summer, so this is the busiest time of the summer for me at work.  I've been spending the majority of my time working in the fields with plants.  Since the hail storm that damaged the vast majority of our plants we have been trying to bring some of our plants back to life.  By picking off the damaged fruits and vegetables form the plants, most of them came back to life.  The only problem is that the plants won't be ready to be harvested for a couple more weeks due to the damage.  This has caused a problem for our produce sales at work since Shane planned on having them by now.

Through all of this it has been a good learning experience for me.  I feel bad that it has come at Shane's expense, but I believe that you must try to find a positive out of any situation.  In this situation it has taught me that you always need to have a backup plan as an entrepreneur.  It would be essential in a business plan to make sure you can cover yourself if you have an off year.  I've been able to witness this through Shane, since his business is extremely diversified.  Another positive is that some plants actually came back to life after being destroyed by hail.  Although these plants won't be ready until later than expected, it's better to have something rather than nothing.

One of the reasons I was interested in this internship was the CSA program.  These programs are becoming more popular every year, and I wanted to see first hand how one worked.  Shane has handed me the reigns of his CSA program, and I quickly learned that it is a ton of work aside from all the other work that needs done on the farm.  I've been writing weekly newsletters, determining the produce customers receive every week, and hand delivering the CSA bags.  It has also been a lot of fun to talk to some of the customers I see when delivering bags.

This summer has been a great learning experience for me, and I've had the opportunity to meet a lot of great people through this internship.  I'm very thankful for this opportunity from AgEI.
